Bandakdee Orphanage. The freedom to express. How painting activities help children to make meaning and connection. Northern Thailand.

I began my journey with the Global Arts Outreach Project last year at Bandakdee Orphanage in Northern Thailand. The children at the orphanage were orphaned, and/or refugee children at risk of becoming victims of he wider issues of drug abuse,  child trafficking and forced labor in Thailand.

Creative arts allow children the opportunity to grow and develop self-awareness through self-expression. When children are given the freedom to express themselves through art, it gives them their own time and space where the courage to express themselves can be developed. As they embark upon their creative work, they can gain confidence and a greater sense of personal achievement. Self expression can also help in processing thoughts and emotions.  They can discover symbols and other forms of artistic expression that reflect their inner world and help them to find meaning.

Art is a simple way for children to explore various forms of expression without judgment or criticism. As they share ideas and support one other’s work, the development of empathy emerges allowing children to break a sense of isolation. Completing a work of art in a supportive group can raise a child’s confidence and self-worth. They are given the ability to make their own decisions, increasing their sense of personal control, and also their enthusiasm to participate in a proactive environment.

Expressive activities such as painting lower stress levels and offer a sense of calm. It provides a space for self-discovery and self-awareness, this can lead to a sense of possibility and can help them find balance as they connect with themselves and their peers on a deeper level.

I would like to thank the amazing staff and children at Bandakdee Orphanage for their enthusiasm and group participation. I was very grateful to be welcomed into your community.
