Visiting the Free Educational Programs at New Hope Centre Cambodia.

Poverty is an ongoing issue in Cambodia, particualrly for those from rural areas, with little access to health, education and low quality of living standards. The New Hope Centre offers vocational training, health programs, community development, volunteer programs and free educational programs for young people, many of whom are from crisis situation families, lacking basic amenities, in Siem Reap.

Last year a fellow teacher and myself visited the centre where we had the opportunity to learn about the free education programs that New Hope provides for local children, and to join the Khamar teachers in delivering lessons from early years to seniors.

We had the opportunity to join the early years teachers in the morning where we learned about the daily routine, shared our thoughts and ideas and also delivered some lessons. The early years english language learning environment is nurturing, enriching and interactive, with a variety of hands on materials, the children also have their own uniforms, resources and access to free food as part of their daily routine.

We later joined with the senior school teachers in their planning process in the late afternoon, working together to learn about their teaching methods and the work they are doing for the young people of the community. Students here also have access to computers and computer training, vital for their future employment.

The restaurant on the premises provides exellent food and service for volunteers and visitors alike and operates as a training restaurant for unemployed individuals from the community, also creating revenue for the school.

We were very grateful to learn of the work, to experience the hospitality and to gain some valuable teaching experience with their early years and senior learners.

New Hope offers enriching volunteering programs in education, health and community development. A great opportunity for anyone skilled in, or interested in these areas. Do support New Hope Cambodia and their work, if you have the chance.
